Intelligent Robots in Science and Society
The science-fiction vision of robots that are smarter than humans and demand their own rights is still just a dream. But, worldwide, robots are playing an increasing role in human lives: in caring for the sick and elderly; in biological modelling; in space exploration; in leisure and entertainment; and increasingly in the military and law enforcement.
This parliamentary seminar will give you the opportunity to meet the scientists and the robots at the cutting edge of UK research and will highlight the ethical questions raised by intelligent robots in science and society.

BIG Creating Shows Workshop
This is a one day interactive workshop for anyone interested in exploring the techniques you can use in creating and developing shows. In the morning, Steve Owens and Ben Craven will take you through methods and thought processes they use when thinking up new shows and demos. This will be followed by an open discussion session and the opportunity to ask questions. The afternoon will consist of a series of fun interactive activities, based on creating, developing, and delivering shows. Please bring along with you your favourite demo or something which represents your work, and meet all the other participants in a fun and fast "meet and greet" session.A light lunch will be provided.

Heart Robot at Bath Fringe Festival
Robotics is forecast to have as profound an effect on human life in the 21st century as computers, cars, and aircraft did in the 20th. Already, children's toys are acquiring believable personalities, and many scientists are investigating how robots can be made more life-like so that we can deal with them as naturally as we would a human being.Using a lifelike puppet equipped with robotic functions, which can 'breathe', can be startled and frightened by loud noise, or calmly go to sleep, we will help people to explore what it might be like to bond with a robot. By marrying robotics with the long traditions of puppetry, animation, mime and other arts we hope to give a glimpse today of the emotional machines of the future!

Directions and Funding of Robotics Research in the UK
The European Commission is offering funding for innovative robotics research within its Framework 7 programme and several national initiatives exist for funding research in this area. There is great potential for the UK robotics community to take advantage of these. However, without a national robotics research programme, achieving this may be difficult, even for researchers active in the area.High level speakers, responsible for setting strategy and the direction of robotics development at the UK and European level, will discuss their ideas about important research hot topics, current programmes, future directions and potential applications. The event will also provide an opportunity to start a discussion in the areas of commonality, overlap, differences and gaps in the UK robotics scene. Download a Registration Form (PDF document)

One Man and His Bot at Cheltenham Science Festival
Many people confuse robots with "remote control vehicles", but a robot should not need a driver - it should drive itself!
One man and his bot features a group of robot "sheep" which flock together, and a remote control "sheepdog". Can you use the sheepdog to get the sheep in the pen?
The event shows how scientists are inspired by biology to create autonomous robots.
