Essex Robotics, University of Essex

This is now the largest group of its kind in the UK. Research in this group covers a wide range of topics, including co-operative robotics, football-playing robots, Multisensor-based navigation and map-building, adaptive robots, intelligent agricultural vehicles, computer vision, networked robots and control systems for autonomous vehicles, analysis of robot behaviour, biologically inspired robotics and precise robot simulation.

Professor Owen Holland (Co- Investigator)

Owen Holland's major current research interests are swarm intelligence, especially swarm robotics, machine consciousness, biomimetic robotics, and the history of cybernetics. Previous projects include the Slugbot (EPSRC), ant-based control of telecommunications networks (Hewlett-Packard), a flying flock of blimps (BAE Systems), a swarm of robots fitted with electronic noses (DARPA/ONR), and a team of mobile robots for sorting office automation (Royal Mail).
